In Sweden, Försvarets materielverk (FMV), the Defense Procurement Administration, has entered into an agreement with Lockheed Martin regarding the supply of TPY-4 radar for long-range air surveillance.
The TPY-4 will help meet increasing demands of the Swedish Armed Forces in terms of early warning and greater air situation awareness.
The TPY-4 radar is part of the new sensor system being developed by Swedish Defense.
The system, developed and refined by Lockheed Martin, is a modern long-range radar using cutting edge technology, with a larger radar range and higher performance compared to the current system, the PS-861, which has now reached the end of its life cycle.
The TPY-4 is capable of detecting small targets such as drones and ballistic missiles at long distances, allowing time to alert the defenses.
One of the advantages is the diffusion of the system within NATO, which allows FMV to better manage the technical and logistical support of the radar, as well as the spare parts.
The total contract value is approximately one billion Swedish krona, equivalent to 91.3 million euros, and options for the purchase of additional systems are foreseen. Lockheed Martin will deliver the first TPY-4 to FMV in 2027, and subsequent deliveries to the Swedish Armed Forces will follow.
