At a meeting in Helsinki with NATO counterparts, the Finnish Ministry of Defense announced that three European countries, Finland, Sweden, and Denmark, have signed a letter of intent to join the MMU (Multinational Multirole Unit) international squadron based on Airbus A330 MRTT multirole aircraft.

This decision will involve the purchase of additional Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft, today nine out of ten examples so far ordered with an option for another pair of aircraft, to support the transport and air refueling capabilities of the European NATO members given the expansion of the NATO member countries involved in the MMU initiative.

The A330 MRTTs perform, in addition to in-flight refueling tasks, also medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) missions and long-haul personnel and goods transport.

The entry of these countries represents a step forward in integration with allies for Sweden and Finland, which previously had agreed to the joint use of the three Boeing C-17 Globemaster III strategic transport always supplied to NATO.

The A330 MRTT model continues to reap orders; In fact, Airbus has already signed contracts for 82 aircraft, of which 64 were delivered, and expects to get more in the near future.
