The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has officially taken a new step in the modernization of its combat aviation. Saab has indeed announced the signing of a contract with the Försvarets materielverk (FMV), the Swedish arms agency, for the supply of four Gripen E/F fighters destined for Thailand. The total value of the order amounts to approximately 5.3 billion Swedish kronor (SEK), with deliveries expected between 2025 and 2030.
The package signed includes three Gripen E and one dual-seat Gripen F, together with support equipment, training, and technical assistance. The agreement also provides for a detailed program of industrial offset and technological cooperation with Thailand. This will encompass technology transfers, collaborations with the local industry, and new investments in various sectors of the national economy, thus strengthening the bilateral relations between Bangkok and Stockholm.
Micael Johansson, president and CEO of Saab, welcomed Bangkok’s decision: _“We welcome Thailand as a new customer for the Gripen E/F. The country is already an affirmed user of the Gripen family and knows the strengths the platform offers to the Royal Armed Forces well. With this choice, Thailand has adopted the most modern fighter currently on the market, on which to build the next generation of independent strategic capabilities._
The Thai Air Force and the Gripen
The RTAF already operates a squadron of multi-role Gripen C/D, introduced since 2011. The addition of the advanced E/F version will allow a seamless integration between the generations and a progressive transition towards the new capabilities.
The Gripen E/F indeed offers advanced avionics, Raven AESA radar, new-generation GE F414G engine, and extended multi-role capabilities, with a strong focus on interoperability with allies. The inclusion of the dual-seat Gripen F also paves the way for advanced training missions and greater operational flexibility.
