Laser Locust for US Army: AeroVironment’s New Prototype

In the United States, AeroVironment Inc. (AV) has announced the delivery of the first two prototype laser weapon systems (LWS), mobile anti-aircraft, remote-piloted (C-UAS) to the US Army Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO) within the framework of the initial increment of the high-energy multi-purpose laser (AMP-HEL) prototype program of the Army.

These AMP-HEL prototypes are equipped with AV’s 20 kW multi-purpose high-energy laser system LOCUST, integrated into the Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) platform of General Motors Defense Infantry Squad Vehicle, a significant progress in the capabilities of frontline mobile C-UAS systems.

The AMP-HEL prototyping initiative is part of a broader Army modernization initiative to develop and quickly deploy direct energy (DE) solutions to counter a wide range of threats, including drones and other airborne offensive systems.

The integration of laser systems on the lightweight and highly mobile ISV platform represents a commitment to scalable, adaptable, and expeditionary force-suitable protection solutions.

Soon, AV will deliver to the US Army the second increment of AMP-HEL: two joint light tactical vehicles (JLT) equipped with a 20 kW LOCUST laser system, radar, and command and control (C2) systems.
