First TRS-4D LR Radar Integrated for Upgrading Germany’s F124 Frigates

Introduction

As part of a project to eliminate long-range sensor obsolescence on the Sachsen F124 class vessels (ObsWuF LV F124), HENSOLDT has delivered the first long-range TRS-4D LR radar system to the Parow Naval Technical School in Germany.

This radar will be used in Parow as a test and reference facility, as well as for training personnel for operations and support.

The system can be employed both on land and aboard the main surface units.

The Program

The program, valued at approximately 220 million euros and initiated by the German Defense in 2021, plans for the supply of a total of three long-range TRS-4D LR radars for the Sachsen-class F124 frigates and one system for the Parow Naval Technical School.

For this initiative, HENSOLDT collaborates with ELTA of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), a leader in the field of wide-range S-band radars with ballistic missile defense (BMD) capabilities.

The New Radars

The new radars are long-range air and maritime surveillance systems of the TRS-4D/LR ROT type, which, starting from 2025, will replace the SMART-L radars currently installed on the three Sachsen-class F124 frigates.

The radar’s AESA technology (AESA = Active Electronically Scanning Array) allows for precise localization of particularly small and maneuverable objects within a range of over 400 km for aerial targets and up to 2,000 km for targets in Earth orbit.
