Saab’s Arexis Electronic Warfare Sensors to Equip German Eurofighters

In Sweden, Saab has announced that it has won two orders from Airbus Defence and Space for the supply of Arexis sensor suites for electronic warfare (EW) intended to equip the Luftwaffe’s Eurofighters.

The total value of the two orders is about 549 million euros and the delivery period of the purchased materials is 2025-2028.

Arexis Electronic Warfare

Arexis Electronic Warfare allows users to detect, locate, and identify radar emitters in complex and congested electromagnetic environments.

The first order marks the continuation of the contract signed with Airbus Defence and Space in March 2024 for the integration of the Arexis EW sensor suite on board the Eurofighter EK (Elektronischer Kampf).

The Eurofighter EK

The Eurofighter EK is the version of the Eurofighter bomber jet for electronic warfare and air defence suppression, currently being developed by Airbus Defence and Space to replace the Panavia Tornado ECR which will be retired by the Luftwaffe from 2030 on.

The Arexis Electronic Warfare system will be installed on fifteen Eurofighters that will be purchased by the Luftwaffe for Electronic Combat/Reconnaissance and Suppression of Enemy Air Defences tasks.

The value of this order is approximately 291 million euros and was immediately acquired by Saab.

The Second Order

The second order, worth 258 million euros and subject to approval by the authorities, includes Saab’s artificial intelligence technology and its German strategic partner Helsing will provide the electronic attack systems based on the Kalaetron Attack pod.

The AI platform developed and fine-tuned by Helsing will allow the radar data collected on board the aircraft to be analyzed and precise self-protection measures against modern enemy radars to be generated in a few milliseconds.
