Sweden Strengthens Air Defense of the Brigades

Saab has announced that it has received an order from the Swedish Defense Procurement Administration (Försvarets materialverk; FMV), for the supply of sensors and command and control systems for a ground-based air defense system for the Brigades.

The value of the order is approximately 2.1 billion Swedish kronor, equivalent to 190 million euros, and equipment deliveries will take place in 2027-2028.

The ground-based air defense units of the Swedish Army’s Brigades will have increased combat control capacity and the ability to detect and engage various types of air threats, thanks to these systems.

The command and control systems and sensors continue to be based on previous deliveries made to FMV to strengthen Swedish ground-based air defense.

Equipment Purchased from FMV

In addition to the command and control system (LSS Lv) and the Giraffe 1X radar, the order includes the integration of the weapon system, studies, and spare parts. This provides the customer with a highly mobile, short-range, ground-based air defense system for the Brigades.

The ground-based air defense command and control system (LSS Lv) is a software used by the unit to control engagement with air targets, distribute target data, and conduct air defense combat planning and evaluation.

The contract recently signed with FMV also includes a study on integrating the Brigade’s ground-based air defense system with the Giraffe AMB radar for medium-range surveillance.
