New HIMARS Launchers Acquired and an Agreement Signed for Short-Range Air Defense Artillery Systems

With the acquisition of an additional 14 launchers, in recent days the Directorate of Land Armaments (Terrarm) completed the procurement process for the Italian Army for 21 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), including the specialized technical support for their introduction into service. The program was initiated in February last year through a contract with the United States government agency “STrategic Operational Rocket Missile (STORM)”, in accordance with the requirements set by the Armed Forces.

The acquisition of the HIMARS is in line with the “Operational Concept of the Italian Army 2020-2035” and with the enabling capabilities outlined in the “Army 4.0” concept paper. In fact, it falls within initiatives aimed at enhancing “non-contact maneuvering”, the projection capability, and the volume of fire deliverable, all within the framework of greater deployment flexibility.

Terrarm has also signed a contract with Rheinmetall Italia for the acquisition of short-range air defense systems (C-RAM) designed to counter rockets, artillery, and mortars. The “Counter Rocket, Artillery and Mortar” system is intended to protect critical infrastructures and Italian contingents deployed in international operational theaters, allowing for a rapid and targeted response to such threats. The initial supply includes one C-RAM system, with the option to acquire an additional three should operational needs change.

Note

TERRARM
TERRARM, the Directorate of Land Armaments, is a specialized branch within the Italian Ministry of Defense responsible for the acquisition, management, and modernization of land-based military equipment. It plays a crucial role in ensuring that the Italian Army is equipped with the latest and most effective technologies. By overseeing procurement processes and implementing modernization initiatives, TERRARM supports the armed forces in maintaining operational readiness and adapting to evolving military needs.

HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System)
HIMARS is a cutting-edge, truck-mounted artillery rocket system designed for rapid deployment and high mobility. Its primary function is to deliver precise long-range fire support with a high rate of fire, allowing military forces to quickly respond to threats while minimizing exposure. HIMARS is valued for its versatility and speed, as it can fire multiple rockets in rapid succession and then relocate, thereby enhancing both offensive capabilities and battlefield survivability. This system is a key component in modernizing artillery support and ensuring strategic flexibility in dynamic combat environments.

C‑RAM (Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar)
The C‑RAM system is an advanced defensive technology developed to protect troops, critical infrastructure, and strategic assets against indirect fire threats such as rockets, artillery shells, and mortars. By integrating sophisticated radar, sensor, and interception technologies, C‑RAM detects incoming projectiles and neutralizes them before they can inflict damage. This rapid response capability is vital in contemporary warfare scenarios, where the protection of personnel and assets in high-threat environments is paramount.
