Slovenia Acquires Additional IRIS-T SLM Air Defense Batteries

The German Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has signed a contract on behalf of the Slovenian Ministry of Defense with Diehl Defence for an additional pair of IRIS-T SLM air defense systems.

Joining the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), Slovenia had placed an order in 2024 for an initial IRIS-T SLM battery for medium-range air defense.

The two batteries will consist of radar components, a tactical operations center and respective missile launchers, as well as guided IRIS-T SLM missiles and logistical support, including support elements such as a mobile workshop, spare parts, and munition reloading vehicles.

The Slovenian contract represents the first follow-up award under ESSI managed by BAAINBw. Contracts under the ESSI allow for a faster procurement process and large synergies in the areas of training, maintenance, and logistics in the future, which ESSI customers can benefit from.

Currently, 24 member states adhere to the European Sky Shield Initiative whose objectives are to improve the interoperability of nations with NATO and to create synergies through joint procurement.

The IRIS-T SLM is designed to counter threats posed by aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and enemy drones at a range of up to 40 km and an altitude of up to 20 km. It is characterized by a 360-degree coverage, high tactical mobility, launchers deployability, and the engagement of multiple targets with reduced personnel requirements.
