Taiwan Boosts Defense with Additional M142 HIMARS Acquisition
The Government of Taiwan is planning to purchase 28 new M142 HIMARS launchers from the United States, bringing the total to 57 units, along with the acquisition of additional NASAMS air defense missile systems.
Beyond the GMLRS ammunition that reaches 70+ km in range, and GMLRS ER or Extended Range with a reach of 150+ km, the M142 can also launch the short-range ATACMS or MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System.
The ATACMS in its M-57 version can accurately target within a radius of 300 km. Each HIMARS is capable of carrying and launching an ATACMS at a time.
Furthermore, the HIMARS manufactured by Lockheed Martin can launch a pair of Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM) which, in their current first version available, reach 500 km replacing the short-range ATACMS which have been decommissioned at least for the U.S. Army.
