Denmark Secures Additional CV90 Combat Vehicles: A Closer Look

Denmark Orders More CV90

BAE Systems Hägglunds AB has announced a contract win with the Danish Defense Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO) for the supply of 44 additional CV90 MkIIIC infantry fighting vehicles.

The new DALO order is worth approximately $450 million, equivalent to 391 million euros, and includes the supply of spare parts, support, logistics, and initial training for Danish personnel.

This purchase stems from a close and fruitful collaboration between Denmark and Sweden, according to Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, and is part of the previous agreement between DALO and the Swedish FMV contractor with BAE Systems Hägglunds for the purchase of CV90 MkIIIC.

Replacement for CV9035 DK Upgrade

The contract is based on a previous order worth 1.3 billion euros awarded in 2024 for 115 CV90s, bringing the total number of CV90 MkIIIC for the Danish Royal Army to 159, replacing the mid-life upgrade (MLU) program originally planned for the current fleet of CV9035 DK.

This reflects Denmark’s commitment to modernizing its military capabilities with the latest technologies.

Thus, with the decision to replace the current 44 CV9035 DKs with new CV90 MkIIIC vehicles, the Danish Royal Army will have a leading-edge 159 infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) by the end of 2030.

The existing 44 CV9035 DK infantry fighting vehicles will be gradually phased out and stored for spare parts, as much as possible to support the new IFVs.

Delivery of the 159 new IFVs by BAE Systems Hägglunds to the Danish Royal Army is expected between 2027 and 2030.

Features of the Danish CV90 MkIIIC

The CV9035 MkIIIC is built to the same standards as the latest mid-life update program for the CV90 for the Netherlands.

The vehicles will be equipped with the new turret of the CV90 armed with the 35/50 mm Bushmaster III, which represents a leap forward in design and functionality and also offers significant ergonomic improvements for the vehicle crew.

The new CV90 MkIIIC will come with rubber tracks that reduce the overall weight and improve mobility, and comfort for the crew and transported infantry squad, reducing noise impact.

The Danish IFVs will be equipped with an anti-tank missile system (ATGM), likely the Rafael ADS Spike LR2, and an active protection system (APS).

CV90 Program Status

The vehicle is the result of years of proven combat experience, continuous improvements, and data collection from current CV90 users, and offers interoperability among nations.

With a total of 1,900 vehicles ordered in 17 different variants, the CV90 has travelled over eight million kilometers.

The Anglo-Swedish vehicle has been selected by 10 European nations, eight of which are NATO members, and has seen combat in Afghanistan and Ukraine, as well as operations in Liberia.
