Fincantieri: Upcoming US Navy Orders for Post-Constellation Era

Introduction

As part of the U.S. Navy’s extensive fleet overhaul aimed at transitioning towards a future model of technological excellence, integration of manned and unmanned ships, and long-term sustainability, Fincantieri and the U.S. Navy have struck a significant agreement. This deal reshapes the future of the Constellation-class frigate program presently underway at Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM), Wisconsin. Fincantieri strengthens its strategic partnership with the Navy, validating its status as a key player in shaping America’s naval defence outlook with its advanced industrial capabilities and long-term investments.

Working Towards New Naval Classes

Working closely with the U.S. Navy, the Group will help build new classes of naval units. It is anticipated that Fincantieri will receive new orders to build ships in sectors that meet immediate national interests and the resurgence of American shipbuilding, such as amphibious ships, icebreakers, and special mission ships. Fincantieri is ready to execute the planned contracts in coordination with the Navy. Looking forward, in line with the Group’s capabilities and industrial potential, Fincantieri will support the U.S. Navy as it redefines its strategic choices in the segment of small surface combatants, manned or unmanned.

Continuity and Future Orders

The agreement stipulates the continued work on the two Constellation-class frigates currently under construction and discontinuation of the contract related to the other four ordered frigates, reflecting the evolving strategic priorities of the U.S. Navy. In addition to the potential for future orders, the agreement provides for Fincantieri Marine Group’s indemnification for existing financial commitments and industrial impacts, through measures provided by the U.S. Navy, following the contractual decision made for its convenience.

Investment and Employment

This new setup guarantees continuity and visibility of workload for Fincantieri staff and the entire Wisconsin shipyard system – a pivotal cornerstone of the American naval industrial base. The agreement appreciates the investments and expertise developed to date. Over recent years, Fincantieri has invested over 800 million dollars in its four American shipyards in Marinette, Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay, and Jacksonville, aiming to ensure maximum production efficiency, flexibility, and technological innovation. These investments have allowed the consolidation of an advanced industrial chain capable of meeting the new priorities of the Navy which includes prompt delivery, modulation, and scalability of naval platforms.

CEO’s comments

George Moutafis, CEO of Fincantieri Marine Group, commented:

“The agreement reached with the U.S. Navy marks a new chapter in our strategic partnership, built on mutual trust, a shared vision, and commitment to excellence. The set course for the Constellation program ensures necessary stability for our teams and the entire Wisconsin shipyard system, allowing us to continue investing in innovation and skills. As the Navy prepares to introduce new types of units, we are ready to support its evolving needs, leveraging the strength of our American facilities and gained experience. Our investments in American shipyards attest to our long-term vision: being a pillar of the American maritime industrial base and a driving force behind the revival of American shipbuilding.”

Conclusion

In the future development model, Fincantieri positions itself as one of the reference shipyards for the U.S. Navy, affirming its strategic role in supporting the evolving needs of the Navy. The Group looks forward to collaborating with all stakeholders for implementing the newly defined path, further developing the skill sets nurtured in its American facilities, and supporting sustainable growth of the entire sector.
