In the United States, FN America LLC has announced that it has won a $4.9 million contract to provide new FN M240L medium machine guns caliber 7.62x51mm to the US Army. The M240L, lighter but durable, was adopted in 2010 and represents a significant improvement over the previous model, the FN M240B. The fire rate is 550-650 rounds per minute while the weight is about 10 kilograms. The weapon’s dimensions are 1,230 mm (48.5 inches) long with the standard barrel and 1,130 mm (44.5 inches) with the short barrel. The reduction in weight was achieved through new production techniques that saved 2.5 kilograms through the use of a titanium receiver and a polymer trigger frame. The M240L is equipped with a 4″ shorter barrel and a redesigned folding stock group. The M240L variant has multiple integrated MIL-STD-1913 mounting rails for optics, lights, and lasers. The new contract is part of an ongoing effort to develop advanced military equipment, highlighting FN’s commitment to defense. The M240 machine gun, based on the FN MAG 58, has been in service with the US Armed Forces since the 70s, with variants such as the coaxial M240, M240D, and M240H. FN has collaborated with the US Army to develop an efficient weapon without compromising its performance, proving to be a benchmark in the medium machine gun industry.
