Introduction

During the operation “Iron War”, the Defense Research and Development Directorate (DDR&D) of the Israeli Ministry of Defense (IMOD), the Israeli Air Force (IAF), and RAFAEL Advanced Defense Systems have initiated an accelerated development program to implement revolutionary interception systems.

Operational Success

The operators of the IAF Aerial Defense Array used high-powered laser system prototypes in the field, successfully intercepting dozens of enemy threats. These systems are based on technological innovations developed over decades at RAFAEL, in close collaboration with the DDR&D R&S Division.

Future Potential

The laser systems employed are part of RAFAEL’s Direct Energy Weapons portfolio, developed in conjunction with the IMOD, and complement the more powerful IRON BEAM system currently under development, with delivery to the IDF expected by the end of the year.

Iron Beam

The high-powered IRON BEAM (HELWS) with 100 kW produced by RAFAEL’s production lines is set to dramatically change the air defense paradigm, allowing for quick, precise, and cost-effective interceptions, unmatched by any existing system.

The laser system in question is capable of quickly and effectively engaging and neutralizing a wide range of threats from a distance of hundreds of meters to several kilometers. By aggregating at the speed of light, Iron Beam has an unlimited charger, with almost nil interception cost and causes minimal collateral damage.
