Italian Air Force receives first EC-27J JEDI2 with enhanced capabilites

The C-27J Spartan, a tactical transport aircraft designed and manufactured by Leonardo’s Aircraft Division (LDV), has long been celebrated for its versatility in airlift, personnel transport, and airdrop missions. Now, this robust platform has been elevated to new heights with the delivery of its upgraded variant, the C-27 JEDI2 (Jamming and Electronic Defense Instrumentation), in 2024.

Developed in response to a 2020 requirement from the Italian Air Force, the JEDI2 represents a leap forward in electromagnetic and electronic warfare capabilities, positioning it as a critical asset in modern military operations.

This upgraded variant provides significantly enhanced capabilities compared to the two existing JEDI aircraft currently operated by the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa ensuring superior performance and effectiveness in electronic warfare and defensive operations.

The “JEDI2” version introduces a cutting-edge Electronic Warfare (EW) suite, transforming the aircraft into a multi-role platform capable of dominating the electromagnetic spectrum. Central to its upgrades are high-power emitting antennas and an advanced mission control system, which together enable the JEDI2 to disrupt enemy communications, jam threats, and—most notably—neutralize ground-based explosive devices, such as improvised explosive devices (IEDs). This capability is vital for safeguarding troops during ground operations, effectively denying adversaries the ability to trigger explosives remotely.

In 2024, the EC-27J JEDI aircraft participated in critical operational missions, notably within the context of Operation Prima Parthica. During this deployment, it effectively disrupted adversary electronic systems, safeguarded coalition forces, and significantly contributed to operations against Daesh (ISIS). Its successful integration into broader coalition command-and-control structures allowed it to operate seamlessly alongside NATO and allied assets, demonstrating robust interoperability and enhancing overall mission effectiveness.

Mission Profile:

  • Electronic Warfare (EW): Actively disrupts and jams enemy communications, radar, and other electronic systems.
  • Signals Intelligence (SIGINT): Monitors, intercepts, and analyzes electromagnetic signals to provide actionable intelligence in real-time.
  • Force Protection: Protects friendly ground and air units by neutralizing enemy electronic capabilities, thus significantly enhancing battlefield survivability.

Key Capabilities:

  • Advanced Electronic Countermeasures (ECM):
    • Powerful jamming systems capable of neutralizing enemy radars and communications, significantly limiting adversary electronic warfare capabilities.
  • State-of-the-Art SIGINT Suite:
    • Comprehensive electromagnetic spectrum monitoring, interception, and direction-finding capabilities.
  • Real-time Command & Control Integration:
    • Ability to rapidly disseminate gathered intelligence to ground forces, airborne assets, and command centers.

Technical Characteristics:

  • Platform: Modified Alenia C-27J Spartan airframe.
  • Crew: Includes specialized EW operators, intelligence analysts, and standard flight crew, enabling comprehensive electronic warfare operations.
  • System Integration: Equipped with advanced antennas, sensors, and processing units externally mounted on the fuselage, tailored specifically for EW/SIGINT roles.
