On September 2nd in Japan, the Chief of Staff of the Ground Self-Defense Force, General Arai, took part in the launch ceremony of the first Patria Armoured Modular Vehicle (AMV XP) 8×8 to be seen on a production line. The event took place at the Muroran plant of the Japan Steel Works Ltd. (JSW).
As announced at the presentation, the first series-produced AMV XPs by JSW will start being distributed to the JGSDF units within the current fiscal year.
The AMV XP is set to replace the Type 96 8×8 wheeled armoured vehicle currently in use by the JGSDF.
The Finnish-made vehicle by Patria is noted for its excellent mobility and level of protection, providing safe personnel transport even in dangerous situations. The JGSDF is planning to extensively use the AMV XP in international peace cooperation activities where Japanese forces are involved.
Features of the AMV XP 8×8
The AMV XP has the best available modular ballistic protection in its category, can be equipped with active protection systems (APS), and offers protection against IED, NBC and ballistic threats up to level K5+. Additionally, it offers mine protection up to STANAG 4a/4b level. Its stealth capabilities are excellent due to the vehicle design and reduced heat trace.
The vehicle features higher separate hydropneumatic suspensions and an extremely durable chassis structure, excellent for off-road driving at high speed. The Integrated Terrain Control System is based on an efficient power pack and an optional steerable rear axle, further improving manoeuvrability.
With its large tyres and the CTIS system enabling lower surface pressure, the vehicle also includes Run Flat and ABS systems to support its mobility. The AMV XP can ford through inland waters and can even be configured for amphibious operations.
The Agreement Between Patria Group and Japan Steel Works
The production of the Finnish origin armoured vehicle in Japan started with the assembly of the AMV XP 8×8 using parts and subassemblies imported from Finland.
In addition to kickstarting vehicle assembly, Japan Steel Works will work to establish a local subcontractor network. According to the licensing agreement, locally produced components can be used in the vehicle manufacturing, and Patria will provide technical support in network creation. There is a possibility that these Japanese subcontractors may be incorporated into Patria Group’s global supply chain in the future.
