Portuguese Navy Opts for Three FREMM EVO by Fincantieri

Portugal has made the decision: **the new frigates set to strengthen the world’s oldest existing navy will be Italian.** As reported by [CNN Portugal](https://cnnportugal.iol.pt/fragatas-italianas/fragatas/portugal-escolhe-as-fragatas-italianas-para-reforcar-a-marinha/20251204/6931c30cd34e3caad84c0805), Lisbon opted for the acquisition of **three FREMM EVO units** produced by Fincantieri. The overall value of the program is estimated at around **three billion euros,** with delivery expected **by 2030, according to [DN](https://www.dn.pt/).**

**The FREMM EVO is the most recent evolution of the FREMM family** and ranks among the most modern and high-performing frigates in their category. The platform introduces an entirely updated digital architecture and advanced C4ISR capabilities, integrated with new radar and sonar systems capable of **operating in complex and multi-threat scenarios.**

SAFE Program

The decision is closely **linked to the SAFE program** (_Security Action for Europe_), an initiative of the European Commission that provides about 150 billion euros of favourable condition loans to member states for investments in the defence industry.

Italian-Portuguese Cooperation

The agreement comes at a time of strengthening industrial relations between Rome and Lisbon. On the last 26 November, the defence ministers of the two countries signed a declaration of intent to **strengthen cooperation** in the technological and industrial sectors related to defence.

Important Agreement

The acquisition represents **a significant success both industrially** and on the political-strategic level. Fincantieri further consolidates its leadership in Europe in the construction of complex naval platforms, while Italy strengthens its role as a technological partner within the EU and in the Western Mediterranean.
