The Rolls-Royce MT30 marine gas turbine and variable pitch propellers, along with MTU-powered diesel generator sets, have been selected again for the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN)’s FFX Batch IV frigate, also known as the Ulsan class frigate.

Long-term Partnership Between RoKN And Rolls Royce

Use of the 20 MT30 marine gas turbines on the Batch II, III and IV frigates will provide evident advantages for the RoKN, such as spare parts, support infrastructure, and commonality in staff training.

As part of the ongoing design collaboration between Rolls-Royce and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) for the integrated specialized gas turbine cabin for the MT30, HHI-EMD will continue to be responsible for the production of this highly complex engineering cabin and all auxiliary components in the country, in addition to continuing to provide in-service support

International Spread of The MT30

The MT30 gas turbine is already in service with various military navies around the world, including the United States Navy’s ‘Freedom’ class Littoral Combat Ships and ‘Zumwalt’ class destroyers, the Republic of Korea’s ‘Daegu’ and ‘Chungnam’ class frigates, the Royal Navy’s ‘Queen Elizabeth’ class aircraft carriers, and the Italian Navy’s new Landing Helicopter Dock ‘Trieste’.

The FFX Batch IV Program

The FFX Batch IV program will start at the end of the FFX Batch III program and is expected to deliver six more ships in the 2028-2032 period.

Batch IV will be similar to Batch III but has improvements in four areas: armaments, command and control of combat, electronic warfare, and self-protection systems.
