Saab has announced signing a contract with Försvarets materielverk (FMV), the Swedish defense procurement agency, for a large uncrewed undersea vehicle.
The contract’s value amounts to 60 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to 5.42 million euros.
The Project
The objective of the project, led by FMV, is to develop a concept for a large uncrewed undersea vehicle, known as Large Uncrewed Undersea Vehicle (LUUV).
As part of this program, Saab will serve as the main contractor of the LUUV and will be responsible for the design, construction, and testing of the vehicle.
Saab’s autonomous control system, the Autonomous Ocean Core, which provides autonomous capabilities for surface and subsea vessels, will be integrated into the vehicle’s systems.
Initial sea trials of the experimental LUUV are scheduled for the next summer.
Need to Monitor Subsea Infrastructure
The Swedish Defense has an urgent need to monitor and map subsea infrastructures and detect and deter threats beneath the surface, repulsing them with perfect response times.
According to Saab, the LUUV will be a sensor platform developed to have various capabilities and will serve as a decision support tool for operators and is not designed to carry weapons, at least in the initial stage.
