As announced by the Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, eight systems will be purchased, each comprising four units of a radar, a command and control structure, one or more launchers, logistic and maintenance vehicles, and a certain number of missiles for reloading.
In addition to the eight SAMP/T systems, equivalent medium-range defense systems will be purchased. The choice will be made among NASAMS, IRIS-T SLM, and MICA VL, some of which have already been leased or purchased as an emergency measure to meet immediate needs.
The Minister emphasized that the SAMP/T systems and the medium-range systems can operate individually or jointly within a multi-layered architecture that will ensure Denmark’s defense against any type of aerial threat.
The purchase of these systems has found broad consensus in Parliament, not only among the majority parties but also among the opposition, due to the need to defend Danish skies in the current situation of great instability and risk of a major conflict in Europe.
For the Eurosam consortium, this is a significant achievement, having gained a first success outside of France and Italy, which, along with Singapore, have adopted the ground version of the air and missile defense system that manages the Aster missiles.
France and Italy have initiated the development of the NG version of the SAMP/T capable of employing the updated version of the Aster 30 missile and the Block 1 NT version for anti-missile use.
The new SAMP/T NG systems will be assigned to the Italian Military Air Force and the Army as well as the Armée de l’Air et de l’Espace.
