Thailand Commissions Four Saab Gripen E/F Jets in a 5.3 Billion SEK Contract

The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has made a significant stride in the modernization of its combat aviation. Saab has announced the signing of a contract with the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) for the supply of four Gripen E/F fighters destined for Thailand. The total order value stands at around 5.3 billion Swedish Kronor (SEK), with deliveries anticipated between 2025 and 2030.

The signed package includes three Gripen E and one Gripen F two-seater, along with support equipment, training, and technical assistance. Furthermore, the agreement outlines an intricate program of industrial offset and technological cooperation with Thailand. This will involve technology transfers, collaborations with local industry, and new investments in multiple sectors of the national economy, thereby strengthening bilateral relations between Bangkok and Stockholm.

Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab, welcomed Bangkok’s decision: ‘We welcome Thailand as a new customer for the Gripen E/F. The country is already a confirmed utilizer of the Gripen family and is well aware of the strengths the platform offers to the Royal Armed Forces. With this selection, Thailand has opted for the most modern combat aircraft currently on the market, providing a foundation for building the next generation of independent strategic capabilities.’

The Thai air force and the Gripen

The RTAF already operates a squadron of multi-role Gripen C/D, introduced starting 2011. The addition of the more advanced E/F version will allow a perfect integration between generations and a gradual transition towards new capabilities.

The Gripen E/F in fact offers advanced avionics, Raven AESA radar, next-generation GE F414G engine, and extended multi-role capabilities, with a strong focus on interoperability with allies. Furthermore, the inclusion of the two-seater Gripen F opens the way for advanced training missions and enhanced operational flexibility.
