Third Batch-III Ulsan-Class Frigate Launched in South Korea
In South Korea, the launching ceremony of FFG-831 Jeonnam, the third Batch-III Ulsan-class frigate, has been held at the SK Ocean facility in Goseong, Gyeongsangnam-do.

The third 3,600 ton frigate of the South Korean Navy, the Jeonnam, is 129 meters long, 14.8 meters wide, and 38.9 meters high. It is equipped with a 5-inch or 127/62 mm cannon, the Korea Vertical Launching System (KVLS), anti-ship missile defense systems, anti-ship missiles, cruise missiles, and long-range anti-submarine torpedoes as its principal weapons.
Special Features of the Jeonnam Frigate
The Jeonnam frigate is equipped with a nationally produced multi-function Phased Array (MFR) radar. This four-side fixed MFR, like the Aegis radar, is capable of detecting and tracking air and naval targets in all directions, as well as engaging multiple airborne targets simultaneously. The currently serving Batch-I (Incheon class) and Batch-II (Daegu class) frigates use separate rotating tracking and detection radars.

In addition, the Jeonnam-class destroyer’s mast incorporates the Integrated Sensor Mast (ISM), a state-of-the-art technology. The ISM incorporates a fixed and quadrilateral multi-function phased array radar, infrared detection and tracking equipment, and features a stealth design.
Propulsion System of Jeonnam-class Frigates
The propulsion system of the Jeonnam class uses the same hybrid propulsion system as the Batch-II (Daegu class) to minimize underwater radiated noise and has excellent anti-submarine warfare capabilities thanks to the operation of a hull-mounted sonar (HMS) and a towed array sonar system (TASS) developed with national technology.
The Batch-III Ulsan-class frigates are replacing the old type frigates (FF) and combat and patrol corvettes (PCC).
