Ukraine and KNDS, First Gepard Systems Repaired on Ukrainian Soil

Ukraine has taken a significant step towards industrial autonomy in the defense sector thanks to collaboration with KNDS Deutschland, one of Europe’s main arms manufacturers. During a meeting with CEO Ralf Ketzel, Ukrainian authorities announced that, within the framework of ongoing cooperation, the first three Gepard air defense systems have been repaired in Ukraine.

The Gepard, an anti-aircraft vehicle based on the Leopard 1 hull, has become one of the key weapons in Ukrainian defense against Russian drones and missiles. The ability to repair these systems directly on national territory represents a paradigm shift: it reduces downtime, increases operational availability at the front, and strengthens the logistical resilience of the Armed Forces.

KNDS has confirmed its willingness to develop in Ukraine maintenance centers and technical support hubs for the repair of its range of systems, starting precisely with the Gepard. These centers are intended to ensure rapid intervention and, in the future, to also produce spare parts and components.

Beyond the logistics, KNDS has expressed interest in the direct experience of Ukrainian military personnel in using Gepards and other systems. The information collected will be used to improve existing products, adapting them to the needs of a modern conflict, particularly against the increasing threat posed by drones.

The meeting also discussed the possibility of creating new joint ventures for the production of equipment and components on Ukrainian territory, in addition to initiating the government project Defence City, which envisages a special legal framework for defense companies. This framework aims to drive investments and joint projects, reinforcing Ukraine’s ability to maintain its war effort and develop a modern industrial base.
